  • Compression wrinkles occur when the face is compressed against something for a long time, such as a pillow during sleep.
  • Permanent elastic creases directly result from factors such as sun exposure, pollution, and smoking. They usually form around the upper lip, cheeks, neck, and décolletage.

Wrinkle Locations and Causes

There are several locations and causes of wrinkles. Although facial wrinkles are the most common concern of our patients, wrinkles can also appear on the neck, chest, forearms and hand areas.

  • Forehead wrinkles are horizontal lines on the forehead, caused by repeated facial expressions and the natural aging process.
  • Worry lines: Also known as frown lines, these are vertical lines that form between the eyebrows due to repeated furrowing or frowning.
  • Bunny lines are fine lines that develop on either side of the nose when you scrunch it up, starting near the inner corner of the eye and extending downward and inward or horizontally on the nose.
  • Marionette lines are wrinkles that form at the corners of the mouth and extend downward toward the chin, caused by factors such as aging, loss of collagen and elastin, and facial muscle action.
  • Nasolabial folds, also known as laugh lines, are the lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, caused by repeated facial expressions and the natural aging process.
  • Neck wrinkles, commonly referred to as “tech neck” or “necklace lines,” can develop due to the natural aging process, loss of collagen and elastin, and repeated neck bending to look down at screens, such as smartphones or other devices.
  • Chest wrinkles, also known as cleavage rhytides, sleep creases, décolletage wrinkles, or brinkles, are skin creases that appear on the upper chest between the neck and upper abdomen. These wrinkles can develop due to the natural aging process, loss of collagen and elastin, sun exposure, and repeated folding of the skin, such as when sleeping on your side. Other factors that can contribute to chest wrinkles include genetics, smoking, medications, and weight gain or loss.
  • Hand wrinkles can appear due to various factors such as the natural aging process, loss of collagen and elastin, sun exposure, and repeated folding of the skin. As you age, your hands lose fat and elasticity, causing the skin to become more translucent and prone to wrinkling. Hand skin is especially vulnerable to wrinkles compared to the rest of the body.
  • Forearm wrinkles can be caused by genetics, weight loss, and sun damage.
